ED affects as many as 30 million men in the United States.

Men can take a group of drugs called PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase-5) inhibitors.

Most of these pills are taken 30 to 60 minutes before sex-the most famous is the blue pill sildenafil (Viagra). Other options are:

  • vardenafil (Levitra)
  • tadalafil (taken as a once-daily pill called Cialis)
  • avanafil (Stendra)

Sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra) belong to a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. In order to understand how they work, we need a quick 101 on erection. In order to get an erection, a chemical called nitric oxide (NO) sends a message to the penile tissue (technical term, corpus cavernosum), which relaxes and fills with blood. The erection is ended by another messenger, PDE5 (phosphodiesterase-5).
